El Ministerio de Sanidad y Consumo informó hoy que descubrió material tóxico en los tubos de pasta de dientes que se dan como regalo a pacientes de hospitales, clientes de hoteles y viajeros de avión.
En su alerta, ese despacho señala que el producto afectado no se vende en tiendas. Un análisis de su Centro de Investigación y Control de Calidad reveló la presencia de pequeñas cantidades de dietilenglicol en esos tubos.
El compuesto se usa en fabricación de anticongelantes y disolventes, pero también puede actuar como sustituto barato de la glicerina, empleado como espesante de dentífricos.
Aunque el riesgo para la salud es mínimo, ya que el dietilenglicol es tóxico sólo si se ingiere en cantidades grandes (un niño de 12 kilos de peso tendría que comerse 80 mililitros de pasta -un tubo grande entero- para notar sus efectos tóxicos), la alerta ha sido general.
El producto afectado es de la marca Spearmint que suministra a hospitales, hoteles y aviones. En Estados Unidos fueron localizados 900 mil envases de dentífrico contaminado con dietilenglicol.
Las pruebas médicas indican, señala la información oficial, que el límite permisible de ese material tóxico en un producto para uso humano no debe superar el 0,1 por ciento, pero la pasta de dientes contaminada examinada tenía hasta 5,0 de esa sustancia.
Dietilenglicol fue el producto tóxico incluido en un jarabe médico que causó la muerte a más de un centenar de personas en Panamá hace unos meses.
